Smart Smile Basics: Bruxism

Posted .

Bruxism is an oral health condition that often arises when you grind your teeth. It often happens unconsciously, although it is most present while you sleep. If you ever feel like you have a sore jaw or sensitive teeth when you wake up, bruxism may be to blame. It is important to always look for signs and symptoms to determine if you are grinding your teeth while you sleep.

Speak with your roommate or sleep partner to determine if you are grinding your teeth while you sleep. In addition, take note of any damage that may have occurred to your smile. If your teeth appear extra flat or worn, bruxism may be to blame. In addition, if you have any damage to your gum tissue in your inner mouth or indentations on your tongue, you may be grinding your teeth while you sleep.

Bruxism also causes pains in your facial area when you awake. If you notice any sensations of jaw or facial pain, tired or tight muscles, earaches that do not originate in your ear, headaches, or a locked jaw, you may be suffering from bruxism. Speak with your dentist about which applicable treatments you can use to help treat the condition.
